Erica Davies

Former Fashion Editor, Erica Davies is a woman not afraid of wearing colour! The blogger behind The Edited, she effortlessly balances brights with classic pieces - happy to mix, match and clash every shade. A self-confessed décor junkie, red lipstick devotee and leopard print addict – she's our ultimate colour icon.

So, when we introduced our new 'Style Personality' campaign (take the quiz here to find out your style!), we asked the lovely Erica to be one of our four style ambassadors, representing Colour Riot with her own edit and a 'how to work more colour into your wardrobe' workshop at our up and coming pop-in event

We caught up with Erica to talk colourful wardrobes, influences and light bulb moments...

What inspired you to start The Edited – tell us the story behind it?

I worked as a Fashion Editor on national newspapers and magazines and was about to start my second maternity leave. I had a bit of a light bulb moment after a chance meeting with a PR who said they were working with a lot of mummy bloggers. What I took away from it was an opportunity to create my own publication, where I could write about everything I loved from fashion to interiors, keep my creative juices flowing and have an outlet for myself.

What’s the secret to your success?

Ha! That’s very kind of you to say! I’m not sure I know – or if I did I would sell the formula and be a millionaire! I think being honest, having my own voice, being consistent and authentic has a lot to do with social success. I love creating images too, so the fact I can do that for myself is amazing.

What did you do beforehand?

I started off straight after university by doing every kind of work experience going. I worked on various morning TV shows as a fashion assistant before meeting the fashion director of The Mirror, who offered me a job. From there I was made Fashion Editor at The Sun, aged 24 and then on to LOOK magazine as fashion and beauty director. I left LOOK to concentrate full-time on my own projects and website.

What was your plan B?

I always wanted to be a journalist, always! From the age of nine, everything was geared towards that. It was later – as a magazine obsessive – that I decided fashion journalism was for me. If it hadn’t worked out, I would have loved to be an interior designer.

Who are your style heroes?

I love effortless, polished style. I get totally inspired by the way people put different pieces together in interesting ways. I love the high/low style of Olivia Palermo, the eclectic urban looks of Giovanna Battaglia, the London cool of Laura Jackson and of my friends Alex Stedman of The Frugality and Alexis Foreman from Style Memos.

How would you sum your personal style?

I think my style is ‘considered casual’. I am not afraid of print or colour, but equally happy in navy blue or black. I love playing with patterns in similar tones and generally consider leopard print to be a neutral!

Which style essentials couldn’t you live without?

Red lipstick, a midi skirt, statement across the body bag and a striped tee.

What do you wear to feel dressed up?

I love dresses – there is something effortlessly chic about being able to throw it on and go. I’m also a huge fan of a midi skirt and heels mixed with something like a denim or khaki shirt.

Is there something you would never wear?

It’s not that I would NEVER wear them, more that I feel I don’t suit jeans. I wish I did! I would also never wear anything above the knee – skirts, shorts, just no!

Any fashion regrets?

Plenty, although they’re mainly hairstyle related. And a pair of flared loon pants when I was 16 should probably be removed from memory.

What’s your favourite season for fashion?

Summer. I love bohemian styles – anything embroidered or floaty that I can wear with a simple sandal and I am happy.

What’s your favourite item from the hush spring 17 collection?

I absolutely adore the Lara Clutch, which I will wear with everything.

Who is your role model, and why?

My mum. She is the person I rely on to tell me how it is, but I know it’s done with love.

What’s the best advice you’ve ever been given?

Be yourself, there is room for everyone.

What would you tell your 18-year-old self?

To chill out about boys. There are plenty of good ones and you’ll find them.

Fantasy Girls’ Night Out. You get to choose six women to spend the evening with. Who? And where do you go?

I would choose Adele, Michelle Obama, Jennifer Lawrence, Meryl Streep, Ellen DeGeneres and Beyonce! We’d go somewhere cool but small for cocktails and food, and then end up at karaoke. I LOVE karaoke, but somehow don’t think I’d do too well.

We think female friendships are something that should be treasured and celebrated. What quality do all your friends share?

I completely agree. I am a total girl’s girl and love my female friendships. All my friends are funny, warm, caring and creative. There’s a lot of support, conversation and wine.

What’s the one thing people would be surprised to know about you?

I am terrified of snakes. They make me want to cry!

How do you unwind?

I love taking all my make up off, curling up with a cuppa, my husband, the kids and a good film.

We’re off on holiday in Easter and I can’t wait for some sunshine.
